This type seems to first appear in Chinese bronzes of which the earliest surviving examples date from before 450. In Asian art, the nimbus is often imagined as consisting not just of light, but of flames. Muhammad leads Abraham, Moses, Jesus and others in prayer. Theravada Buddhism and Jainism did not use the halo for many centuries, but later adopted it, though less thoroughly than other religious groups. Elaborate haloes and especially aureoles also appear in Hindu sculpture, where they tend to develop into architectural frames in which the original idea can be hard to recognise. ![]() In India the head halo is called Prabhamandala or Siras-cakra, while the full body halo is Prabhavali. Thin lines of gold often radiate outwards or inwards from the rim of the halo, and sometimes a whole halo is made up of these. Different coloured haloes have specific meanings: orange for monks, green for the Buddha and other more elevated beings, and commonly figures have both a halo for the head, and another circular one for the body, the two often intersecting somewhere around the head or neck. Tibetan Buddhism uses haloes and aureoles of many types, drawing from both Indian and Chinese traditions, extensively in statues and Thangka paintings of Buddhist saints such as Milarepa and Padmasambhava and deities. In Chinese and Japanese Buddhist art the halo has also been used since the earliest periods in depicting the image of Amitabha Buddha and others. ![]() The rulers of the Kushan Empire were perhaps the earliest to give themselves haloes on their coins, and the nimbus in art may have originated in Central Asia and spread both east and west. Two figures appliqued on a pottery vase fragment from Daimabad's Malwa phase (1600–1400 BC) have been interpreted as a holy figure resembling the later Hindu god Shiva and an attendant, both with halos surrounding their heads, Aureola have been widely used in Indian art, particularly in Buddhist iconography where it has appeared since at least the 1st century AD the Kushan Bimaran casket in the British Museum is dated 60 AD (at least between 30BC and 200 AD). In India, use of the halo might date back to the second half of the second millennium BC. Asian art Coin of Indo-Greek king Menander II (90–85 BCE), displaying Nike with a halo on the reverse. Hellenistic rulers are often shown wearing radiate crowns that seem clearly to imitate this effect. The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the sun-god Helios and had his usual radiate crown (copied for the Statue of Liberty). On painted wares from south Italy, radiant lines or simple haloes appear on a range of mythic figures: Lyssa, a personification of madness a sphinx a sea demon and Thetis, the sea-nymph who was mother to Achilles. Depictions of Perseus in the act of slaying Medusa, with lines radiating from his head, appear on a white-ground toiletry box and on a slightly later red-figured vase in the style of Polygnotos, c. Homer describes a more-than-natural light around the heads of heroes in battle. Sumerian religious literature frequently speaks of melam ( melammu in Akkadian), a "brilliant, visible glamour which is exuded by gods, heroes, sometimes by kings, and also by temples of great holiness and by gods' symbols and emblems." Ancient Greek world Octadrachm of Ptolemy III ![]() Halos may be shown as almost any colour or combination of colours, but are most often depicted as golden, yellow or white when representing light or red when representing flames. In the religious art of Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism among other religions, sacred persons may be depicted with a halo in the form of a circular glow, or flames in Asian art, around the head or around the whole body-this last one is often called a mandorla. It has been used in the iconography of many religions to indicate holy or sacred figures, and has at various periods also been used in images of rulers and heroes. Though it has a smaller motor than the NordicTrack and LifeSpan machines here, and it lacks the fancy touchscreen you find on other models, the Sole F80 treadmill is still a serious training tool. Plus, you’ll appreciate the small profile if you’re setting it up in a small room. The belt is narrower and shorter than we’d prefer for running, but it’s an ideal size if you’re walking. We set it up in the home of one of our testers, and he found that the deck didn’t shake during months of use. While we don’t often recommend home treadmills that cost less than $1,000 because they generally have small motors and shaky frames, the 7.0 AT is surprisingly steady. We like the thumb dials mounted chest-high on the hand grips that let you quickly adjust your speed and incline-it feels way more fluid than trying to stab at buttons on a console. That keeps costs in check because there’s no built-in television, but it allows you freedom to take Peloton classes or run using Zwift. ![]() It will be up to the Belgorod to carry the torch. So, the Dmitry Donskoy is the end of an era, one in which nuclear Armageddon was a certain fear. Russia’s boomers are an important leg of the country’s nuclear triad and that is something Vladimir Putin does not take lightly. The Warsaw Pact is of course defunct, but the Cold War mentality that proclaims the West is Russia’s ultimate adversary lives on. The Donskoy symbolizes a time when the Warsaw Pact menaced NATO. The headline news is that the Donskoy is at the end of its service life and that official decommissioning will probably happen sometime in the next year. I wouldn’t read too much into the conflicting reports. Typhoon-Class Symbolized Russian Nuclear Might It is clear the Donskoy was meant for nuclear war, so Russia would prefer to keep NATO and the United States guessing when the boomer gets the final ax. The original design had them carrying 20 RSM-52 ballistic missiles with powerful MIRV capability (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles). The other five Typhoon subs were retired between 19. The Donskoy was the first Typhoon introduced, so it has enjoyed quite a service life. The six subs of the Typhoon class were built between 19. Nevertheless, the Dmitry Donskoy is assuredly a relic of the Cold War. Each Typhoon class submarine was originally designed to carry up to 20 R-39 Rif. The state-run media outlet said, “The submarine Dmitry Donskoy has been removed from the fleet and is to be scrapped.” The source, quoted by RIA Novosti, even claimed the name of the Typhoon-class sub has already been given to another boat – the “ Borei-A class (Project 955A), which was laid down at Sevmash last year.” Sevmash, in Severodvinsk, is the only Russian yard that produces submarines. Dmitry Donskoy was the first Typhoon to enter service, being formally commissioned into the Soviet Navy in 1981. RIA Novosti said that the Donskoy was headed for the exits. Newsweek began the speculation on July 20 on Dmitry Donskoy by reporting that the sub would be retired soon. The Belgorod would then be the largest sub in the fleet. Known by the Soviet designation Project 941 Akula (Shark), seven of the massive subs were planned with six being completed. After the Donskoy leaves service, it will be replaced by the Belgorod, a 549-foot Oscar II-class nuclear submarine that was commissioned in July. By comparison, the American Ohio-class boomer only displaces around 21,000 tons and is 14 feet shorter than the Dmitry Donskoy. The Dmitry Donskoy nuclear-powered ballistic missile boat displaces 48,000 tons, more than any other submarine in the world. Despite the murky news, the Dmitry Donskoy is probably slated for retirement within the next 12 months as Russia is loath to admit publicly the last days of such a large and fabled submarine. ![]() Moscow propaganda organs are releasing news about the sub in question – the Dmitry Donskoy, but there are conflicting reports. Which is it? It doesn’t even look like Russia is certain about its future. The Russian Navy’s last Typhoon-class super-sized submarine could be headed to the scrap yard, or it could still be in service the rest of the year. ![]() Survival after an amniotic fluid embolism following the use of sodium bicarbonate. Data from the National Amniotic Fluid Embolism Registry suggests that the process resembles anaphylaxis more than embolism, and the terminology of "anaphylactoid syndrome of pregnancy" has been recommended because fetal tissue or amniotic fluid components are not always found in women who present with signs and symptoms attributable to amniotic fluid embolism. Steiner and Luschbaugh first described amniotic fluid embolism in 1941, after they found fetal cells in the maternal pulmonary circulation, who died during labor. In the United States, AFE occurs in 2 to 8 per 100,000 deliveries and is the cause of maternal mortality between 7.5% to 10%. All the details about how we work are in the book. Then, after we validated the approach, we were able to shape a subsequent project with clearer expectations and build the feature to completion in another cycle. They had a roughly shaped concept but lots of room for R&D work to figure out how to render the chart and store its history. For the first cycle, the team wasn’t expected to ship. We had never built the kind of high fidelity interactions required to drag dots on the hill, and there were lots of open questions about the data model. That’s how we handled Hill Charts in Basecamp 3. Then if that works out, shape a project with clearer expectations and a hard bet. Bet time on exploratory work in the new area to firm up the ground. ![]() In that case, draw a boundary between the part of the app that has a settled architecture and the new area that’s unsettled. Sometimes you need to do build a feature totally unlike anything you’ve done before or with unfamiliar technology. This split between R&D and production mode is also useful for existing products. But we didn’t commit to any specific work further than six weeks ahead. We knew it would take multiple cycles to build BC3 - maybe a year’s worth or more. We still only made commitments one cycle at a time. Those features weren’t anywhere near complete enough to ship, but the stubbed versions gave him confidence that the architecture would accommodate all the functionality we hoped to build later. Extremely bare bones versions of the message board, comments, and to-do features validated the architecture. In the case of Basecamp 3, David (co-founder and CTO) started by doing R&D work to define the access model and how data of many different kinds would belong to one project versus another. Instead of building things half-way like in R&D mode, the team is expected to build a fully working version and deploy it by the end of the cycle. We don’t know if we’ll like a new feature or if we’ll include it in the final cut of the product, but we can define our appetite for it, shape it, bet time on it, and give it to a team. All the detailed Shape Up methods apply at this point. What’s different is now the architecture is settled and the ground is firm, so we can make surer bets. There are still lots of unknowns and unbuilt features in production mode. Once they do, we can shift to production mode. It can take the skunkworks team a few cycles of work before they get to this point. It’s easier to see where new features will go and what they will be built upon. With the key pieces of the architecture in place, constraints now exist for future work. There are lots of deep judgement calls to make and no existing code or interface constraints to guide their efforts.Įventually the R&D team gets to a point where they’re willing to “pour concrete” on the fundamentals. That’s why the team needs to be small and senior. They’ll shape an approach, spike it out, learn something, and try something else. The R&D team integrates shaping and building in a blurry mix within the time box we’ve allocated. But for a new product, you need to get through this experimental phase to arrive at the basic design. That would be very unhealthy in production work. It’s common to pursue one approach for a couple weeks, realize it’s not working, scrap everything, and then try something else. (The Pragmatic Programmers call this “firing tracer bullets.”) Instead of building features to completion, they build just enough to verify that the product hangs together and the architecture accommodates the functionality we’ll need. An experienced designer/programmer team will pair together skunkworks style to work out the basics of the overall architecture and some key interface elements. Instead of shaping and betting on a specific feature idea, we bet a block of time (a six-week cycle) on exploratory work with an extremely rough list of potential features. We call them “R&D mode” and “production mode.” There are two phases of work when you start a new product. We’re working on a new product right now, and we’re following the same approach we used to build Basecamp 3 and Basecamp 2 before it. There’s a new appendix in the book now to answer this question: How to Begin to Shape Up: New versus existing products. People in my book club love all the principles, but they had one question: How did they build Basecamp 3 doing this? It seems like all the practices are for adding features to an existing product. Here’s a common question that’s coming up about Shape Up, our new book on product development: ![]() ![]() Waterproof Compression Bag and Telecompression Bag Note: Even the most elaborate suspension system can only work perfectly when fitted correctly! This means then that we can ignore the operating Q-point biasing and voltage divider circuitry required for amplification, and use the transistor as a switch by driving it back and forth between its “fully-OFF” (cut-off) and “fully-ON” (saturation) regions as shown below. The areas of operation for a transistor switch are known as the Saturation Region and the Cut-off Region. If the circuit uses the Bipolar Transistor as a Switch, then the biasing of the transistor, either NPN or PNP is arranged to operate the transistor at both sides of the ” I-V ” characteristics curves we have seen previously. However, high power devices such as motors, solenoids or lamps, often require more power than that supplied by an ordinary logic gate so transistor switches are used. Some output devices, such as LED’s only require a few milliamps at logic level DC voltages and can therefore be driven directly by the output of a logic gate. Solid state switches are one of the main applications for the use of transistor to switch a DC output “ON” or “OFF”. However, both the NPN & PNP type bipolar transistors can be made to operate as “ON/OFF” type solid state switch by biasing the transistors Base terminal differently operating the transistor as a switch. Due to this, there is a finite time elapse between the transition of the input waveform and the time when the collector current has dropped to 90 percent of I c(sat) and it is referred to as storage time (t s).When used as an AC signal amplifier, the transistors Base biasing voltage is applied in such a way that it always operates within its “active” region, that is the linear part of the output characteristics curves are used. The transistor cannot respond until this saturation excess charge has been removed. When the transistor is in saturation, it has excess minority carries stored in the base. Where Cc is the collector transition capacitance and w T, is the radian frequency at which the current gain is unity. The collector current increases or decreases along an exponential curve whose time constant is \tau _. The rise time and the fall time are because, if a base current step is used to saturate the transistor or return it from saturation to cutoff, the transistor collector current must traverse the active region. The time required for I c to reach 90% of its maximum level from 10% level is called the rise time (t r ) and the time required for I c to go from 90% to 10% of its maximum level is called fall time (t f).Īlso Read:Schottky diode used for switching Finally, some time is required for the collector current to rise to 10 percent of its maximum.Even when the transistor has been brought to the point where minority carriers have begun to cross the emitter junction into the base, a time interval is required before these carriers can cross the base region to the collector junction and be recorded as collector current. ![]() When the driving signal is applied to the transistor input, a nonzero time is required to charge up the emitter junction transition capacitance so that the transistor may be brought from the cut-off to the active region. The delay time exists due to the following reasons. It is the time that elapses the application of the input pulse and current to rise to 10 percent of its maximum (saturation) value I c(sat) = Vcc/Rc. The fall time is specified as the time required for lc to go from 90 % to 10% of its maximum level. It goes to zero level after turn-off time, which is the sum of storage time (t s) and fall time (t f) as shown in Fig. ![]() ![]() Similarly, when the input current I B is switched OFF, Ic does not go to zero level immediately. ![]() Also, there’s a chimp with a straightrazor. For Argento it’s mere window dressing, one of half a dozen different stories that don’t really relate but somehow combine to form this gestalt of awesome weirdness. ![]() For another director the story of a girl with awakening psychic powers in the pubescent pressure-cooker of an all-girls school would be a movie all by itself. While it doesn’t always rank high on most lists – Kim Newman called the film an “almost total failure.” I don’t care, I still love it – jarring heavy metal sequences and all. It’s a story about a girl, played by Jennifer Connelly (pre- Labyrinth), with the psychic ability to control insects and how she teams up with a wheelchair-bound entomologist ( Donald Pleasance, with an… interesting Scottish accent) to catch a killer. Argento’s first film made the giallo a phenomenon and this, his last classic giallo, set the bar so high that it’s arguably never been equaled.Ĭreepers – the shorter US edit of Phenomena – was my very first Argento film, and in my then steady viewing diet of slashers and gore flicks it was something of a revelation. This draws the attention of the murderer, leaving Marcus and the reporter racing to discover the killer’s identity before they’re murdered as well. A local reporter (played by Argento’s partner/collaborator Daria Nicolodi) publishes a photo of him in the paper, naming him as a witness. A musician, Marcus ( David Hemmings), witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic. Perhaps the greatest giallo ever made, and strong contender for greatest Argento film as well, Deep Red sits between the more straightforward (hah!) murder plots of his earlier movies and the more supernatural themed projects that were to follow. Though it doesn’t have some of the excesses of plot, imagery and music of later Argento films, Bird is still a stylish and fantastic film, and a brilliant debut from a man who would go on to redefine both the giallo and the Italian horror film. That scene, with Musante trapped between glass walls as the victim struggles across an all-white room, is startling and effective even now – in 1970 it must have been electric. It’s a beautiful, incoherent mess of a film, with all the hallmarks of early Argento – stylish kills, phenomenal set pieces, and a crazy soundtrack (here by prog-rock legend Keith Emerson, rather than than Argento stalwarts Goblin.) The film is nominally about a woman, Rose ( Irene Miracle), who discovers her New York apartment building may also be the residence of one of the Three Mothers – a cabal of witches who secretly rule the world.
